CAICOS TIDAL FLATS
 
Wanless and Dravis (1989) describe the extensive carbonate tidal flat, 60 km in length and about 10 km in width, that occurs on the southern flank of the islands of North Caicos, Middle Caicos and East Caicos. This Holocene tidal flat has built a sediment wedge that is 3-4 m in thickness at the southern shore and pinches out northward against the emergent Pleistocene island cores.
The flats were divided by Wanless and Dravis (1989) into four shore-parallel subenvironments:
(1) shore levee
(2) outer algal marsh dissected by tidal channels
(3) pond
(4) inner algal marsh and evaporitic crust zone.
Navigable channels terminate in the pond zone, but small channels extend to the inner algal marsh. Channels extend with divided digitate form inland.
