Leck Point to Bromore West

Kilbaha Bay

Panorama of Lower Ross Formation to Upper Clare Shale in the cliffs east of the ruined castle at Leck Point just south of Drom extending to Bromore West. These Namurian outcrops of turbiditic sands and euxinic shales are accessed by road and then a gulley to the beach (see left end of panorama) through the cow pastures at Drom.

Satellite Image of the coast of County Kerry from the ruined castle at Leck Point to the cliffs just west of Bromore West. Compiled from Google. Sea Stacks of the Upper Clare Shale of the Upper Carboniferous (Namurian) exposed in the cliffs just south west of Bromore West of Co Kerry. These outcrops are just north of Ballybunion. The shales represent a change in the depositional setting from the underlying Dinantian carbonates. Upper Clare Shale of the Upper Carboniferous (Namurian) exposed in the cliffs below Bromore West of Co Kerry. These cliffs outcrop just north of Ballybunion. The shales represent a change in the depositional setting from the underlying Dinantian carbonates. Upper Clare Shale of the Upper Carboniferous (Namurian) exposed in the cliffs west and down below Bromore West of Co Kerry. These outcrops are just north of Ballybunion. The shales represent a change in the depositional setting from the underlying Dinantian carbonates. Upper Clare Shale of the Upper Carboniferous (Namurian) exposed just seaward to the west of Bromore West, Co Kerry. Though deposited during the marine transgression following the Dinantian carbonates, the wates depths were probably not much deeper than 100m or 300ft. The influence of the influx of siliciclastics is to lead to the accumulation of euxinic shales. Exposures of Upper Clare Shale in the cliffs just south west of Bromore West in Co Kerry. These Upper Carboniferous (Namurian) outcrops are north of Ballybunion but best seen from the Shannon Estuary. The shales represent a change in depositional setting from the underlying Dinantian shallow shelf carbonates to the influx of siliciclastics that upward change to turbidites to deltaic sediments (Lewarne, 1959; Brennand, 1965; Rider, 1969, and Martinsen, 1989). Leck Point to Bromore West - Lower Ross Formation to Upper Clare Shale

This page introduces a gallery of photographs that illustrate the geology of the Namurian Clare shales and Ross Formation where they outcrop along the southern shore of Shannon Estuary just north of Ballybunion in the cliffs from Leck Point to Bromore West. The photographs in this gallery were taken by Christopher Kendall, and Peter Haughton. We extend our special thanks to Geoff McGee, the skipper of the vessel Draiocht base in the Carrigaholt harbour on the northern flank of the Shannon Estuary in Co-Clare, who transported us to many of the various localities featured in our photographs. The first photograph of the series should help readers to locate the other photographs of the Clare shale and Ross formation sediments exposed along the southern shore of the Shannon Estuary. The gallery illustrates the character of the deepwater sediments of the Clare Shale and Ross Formation. The base of the section here starts with deepwater black euxinic Clare shale and is overlain by the turbidite sheet sands of the deepwater fan lobes of the Ross Formation with sparse shallow channeling.
